I have a Standard Hobie 18 and I am getting ready for our sailing season. I would like to replace the rigging on my boat and want to make sure I replace all the necessary parts. There are no visible damage on any of the wires, just a slight sign of rust at the fittings. I don't know how old they are and just want to be safe when the wind is high. Any advice? Could someone recommend a parts list that I can take to my dealer?Thanks |

If there is rust, and you don't know how old they are, I would replace them. As for a list: Shrouds, bridles, forestay, upper forestay and trapeze wires. Buy Hobie wires and not aftermarket. You may save a dollar on non-hobie rigging but it will fail prematurely. Hobies rigging is some of the best in the industry. |

Check the condition of your main halyard.When I went to set up my boat for the first time I gave a hard tug on what I thought was a good line,it wasnt.Ruined the whole trip.Cheap insurance if it hasnt been changed in the last 5 years. shawn 82 h18 #8211 div 3 |

Hey, do you still sail on Lake Mendocino? I saw your post with your boat on the beach. I live in lake county, and would like to try lake mendocino this summer. If you could let me know what its like and where to launch would be great. Thanks, and maybe I'll see you out there. |

Evidence of rust at fittings is a sure sign it is time to replace it. Folks got it right when they said by the Factory stuff. It is much better than alot of the discount stuff out there. Don't forget when replacing your forstay to buy both the upper pigtail and the lower forstay. Always check the boat over for slop in the steering that may indicate some new bushings are in order, and of course check your lines for seaworthyness. |

We sail Lake Mendocino a couple times a year.I launch at the Kyen campground on the north end. The wind usally comes up in the afternoon and drops off at sunset. I am looking forward to more water this year.Last year it was quite low. If you see my boat come by and say hi. |

you all mention using OEM standing rigging for replacement, does that include Murray's? do they use Hobie OEM? is their quality as good? they've been around just about forever and I'd think they were reputable Thanks. |

Murrays makes good stuff. Only issue is there is more of a possibility of length variation. Just compare against the old lengths. I always do that anyway regardless of mfg. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure Murrays offers two diameters for a lot of their shrouds. The OEM standard and then one size up. sm |

don't forget to check the shroud connections through the hull . I had one break on me at arroung T.I. regatta and had to give my local dealer $500 to replace all the parts that cheap little part destroyed. when an 18 de masts under power its nasty. jeremy at surf city has a line on all the 18 rig parts to change. but those shroud anchors are tricky little buggere replace them with the rig . And i have sailed mendicino it was a nice ride actually sold my 18 there now its in redwood city with a new hobie sailor. |

so besides the shrouds, bridles, upper & lower headstay & shroud anchors, what other pieces of standing rigging should get replaced? do chainplates fail? I've never had that happen. |

Just bought a set of rigging from the local dealer.Thanks for the tips. My wife was looking around the store and fell in love with a Mirage Oasis. Looks like I will be adding to my Hobie fleet.

so has anyone else had experience with the Salty Dog Marine rigging products? Thier specs claim to mirror OEM. Their package for the entire rig seems reasonably priced, not cheap but reasonable, when compared to purchasing the parts ala carté from Hobie or Murray's Thanks. |
