So hanging around here, I've learned that to add an asymetric spinnaker to my '88 H18 I can either use the Tiger setup or Hobie Cat's H18 add-on 'kit'. (are they one in the same?) Question is, I cannot seem to find any detailed specs, diagrams or photos of either of these setups, so I cannot make a decision which way to go. so.... I'm hoping some of you salts who've already been this route can point me to some actual parts diagrams or assembly guides? please? Thanks! |

There are two spins that can be used on the 18 with ease. First is the SX spin setup, the pole is shorter and the sail fuller. The sheet system works off the rear crossbar or preferably off the wings. The Tiger system has many different shape and sized sails available and the pole is 12'. The sheet system works off the shrouds or deck and the front crossbar. If you go to the Hobie Europe site there are Tiger spin install instructions. Its really not that hard to do but proper measurements can and will be tricky. Your sail actually determines alot of the placement of blocks, bails, etc. A Tiger spin on a standard 18 mast will be more of a head sail, its too long. You could have it cut down perhaps or have one custom cut, not too bad $1k or less. I switched to an SX mast which is 29'6", a standard 18 is 28'. There is always some compromise when creating a hotrod sailboat. I think it is worth it no matter how you get a spin on the boat. Another thought is too use a hooter type sail instead, check out catsailor.com for info on hooters. They sell and design them, maybe even invented the idea for beachcats. Later |

Make your own or buy pieces from other models. My spin rig has; 12 1/2 ft pole with end snuffer $150 all alum mast, (keep the comptip mast for class legal racing) $170 new spinnaker by local sailmaker as a winter project $500 blocks, sheets, pole rigging, snuffer bag $250 Pictures comming in spring after we dig out from record snowfall during the month of Feburary. Hopefully that will raise the water levels in the Great Lakes. |

my interest is getting better downwind performance outta the boat (duh), as she is notably slower below 100° apparent. I know its not class legal and getting back into racing is a ways off for me. I already sail on a one-design with an 110 SM asymetric so I know how much it adds to downhill performance. unless I break it, I plan on using the stock mast for this setup I will check out the Euro HC site and see also what the Hooter is all about. and I will look forward to your pix. I appreciate it, thanks. |
