Post subject:  tramp rivets
Anyone know what rivets to use in replacing rivets at tramp tracks?

Hobie uses a particular stainless alloy. Part#8010201 3/16X3/8 CSK. Your best bet is to either order them from the Hobie parts catalog or from a local Hobie dealer. I would advise against going to your local hardware store and getting aluminum rivets. They will most likely losen up over time. I tried looking around locally to buy rivets once but found it much easier to just order them from Hobe. They really are not that expensive.

Definitely don't use aluminum rivets of any kind. over time they will weld them selves to the aluminum rail, corrode and dissolve which in turn will egg out the little wholes in the rail in which you are putting your rivits in with the help of the weight on the tramp. use stainless steel and you won't have the corrosion. this is especially true if your a salt water sailor.

I re-riveted the tramp rails on my 18 once a while ago because they seemed kinda loose. I wouldn't recommend doing it unless the rail is almost falling off. It was a bit of a pain and the rail was still loose when I was done. Plus, you probably won't notice it anyway once you put the tramp on and tighten it.

If you do decide to replace the rivets use stainles or monel with the back-up washers. But beware that these rivets are much harder to pop than aluminum. It can be done with a basic Home Depot rivet gun, but you need really strong hands (and that's a lot of rivets to pop).

All I am going to say is AIR riveter,after putting together quite a few race cars and a couple of aluminum hull offshore powerboats,this is the only way to go and they are fairly cheap.(the good ones are adjustable pressure for stainless,mild steel and aluminum rivets.

It's been many years since I messed w/ "tramp rivets" but I seem to remember something about some "pain-in -the-A_s backing washers that were difficult to keep in place and use the rivet gun w/ the other hand. I believe I found it was esier w/ two people to accomplish satisfactually. Also I think I "glued" the track down w/ a thin coat of "5200" when re-riveting the track.

Wear GLOVES as "5200" stickes to EVERYTHING including you!!!

another easy way to do it is: gather together all the strongest glues in your garage including some epoxy or whatever, mix it in all one bucket, let it set for about five minutes and then grab your trusty putty knife and smear it all over the the lip where the tramp rail is going to go. put the rail in place, use masking tape to hold it on overnight. the next day, lace up your tramp, but be sure not to test the holding power of your super duper glue concoction rail re-attachment project until your about to raise your mast. should be a snap!! :wink:
