Rudder foil section profile?

Post subject:  Rudder foil section profile?
Can anyone point me to where I might find a template of the Rudder's foil section?
I have searched through the archives here and around but have not found anything yet.

My '88 H18 orignally came with black EPO rudders, but when I bought it back last year, it was equipped with standard white plastic ones (!@*#!).

...so until such time as I spring for new EPO2's, I want to check my rudder's section profile and tune for max efficiency.

I seem to remember a drawing and an explaination of the foil shape on a Hobie rudder in "Welcome to A Fleet" "Book 1 Boatspeed".

Trying to change the "shape" on those old Lexan (plastic) rudders is a time consuming and thankless task. I've never had any success doing anything more than smoothing them a bit and putting a finer point on the trailing edge. Maybe I'm a bit impatient when working with that material as the inherent flaws with the medium (too much flex under pressure when sailing) are hard for me to get past mentally.

I liken working with Lexan rudders to mud wrestling with a pig, it wastes your time and you get all muddy. ( altho i doubt if the Lexan enjoy's it) :wink:

If you figure your time is worth something, it doesn't take long until buying a new set starts to look pretty good.

I bought a used boat once just to get the Old EPO's. Took off the EPO's for myself, put back on a set of Lexan's and resold the boat for the same $$ that I bought it for.

I dug out my copy of 'Welcome vol. 1' and found the foil template you referenced. Now I just need to see how close it is to the plastic rudders.

One thing, the book was written a VERY long time ago, shucks I got my copies of vol. 1 & 2 when I was racing my H16 in '79. Hasn't the rudder section been updated since then... twice? Once with the EPO and again with EPOv2 ?

I'm wondering whether using the old section template is worth it.
