when I bought my 84 magnum the finish was a flat finish eggshell color. I assumed it was originally white. After removing some stickers the color underneath is beige. Is that a factory color or has it been painted?

That's the original color. They were only made for a couple of years.

Probably the "Tsunami" hull/sail color scheme.

Those would be "Cat Fever"

Any idea what year the sails are? The hulls are 84.

That sail pattern started in 1978 and was made through the early t0 mid-80's. From the sail number, I'd guess it's one of the later ones.

That boat's not an '84, either.

The hull graphics are from ~ '80 or '82.

Yup, those are a set of "Cat Fever" sails (like mine below). You can see the (entire ?) Hobie sail design history in the article starting on pp 18 of this online (pdf format) HCA newsletter

Well, the hull number says 84, but the graphics are definitely older.

The "Hobie Cat" white outline lettering at the stern was changed in 1984 to black, bold italic lettering "Hobie 18" in 1984.

If you look closely on Alan's photo, you can see it in the hull stripe, just below the rear casting.

The hull stripes with the "end caps" were used in 1982.

The whole boat is something of an enigma. I don't think the roller furling jib was available in '84 either but I have one.

Roller furling jibs were standard on Hobie 18s from the very beginning.

My guess on the hulls is that they were made in the early 80's, but not sold until 84 - were in storage at the factory. They don't engrave the full HIN until they are shipped.

I don't know if it was an option, but I have not seen any Cat Fever sails with those kind of tell-tales/windows either. They may have been added later.

FYI, my boat is an '86 but the sails are from an older boat of unknown vintage. I redid the black and gray pin stripes in color last year, but left the black italic "Hobie" that Matt refers to. Owners have been known to do a lot of mods and upgrades over the years, especially to a boat over 20+ years old. 8) 8)
