Does anyone know the correct size and length for the line on the Roller furler on a Hobie 18?

It probably came with 3/16 or 5/32. I put 1/8 on mine and have had no problems. I like a little extra in the spool.

I cleat it in the little V cleat on the crossbar. I hate it because it always snags when unfurling. Is this the right cleat? Has anyone swapped that out for something else?

The V-Cleat is the correct cleat. They use those because the correct location is on the bottom side of the crossbar. "Falling" line tends to keep the furler cleated.

If you want to go to a clam cleat at the same location, you'll need something like the CL230 - though the hole spacing is different. And then, there's no guarantee that the line will stay cleated. But at least the line will stay with the cleat.

My 5-1 came with 1/4. Unless you're freakishly strong I'd bet that would work on the stock 3-1.

Stock is 5 ft of 3/16 in low stretch.

I have a small cam cleat on the front crossbar for the jib furling line and it works fine; just put a small ball on the end. For the downhaul, move up to the eight to one; it really makes it easier to adjust on the water.

Me, too. In the Hobie catalog go to page 25 and check out part H423 (cam cleat) and put it on top of a wire fairlead (don't know which one I have, either H298 or H284), or screw an eyestrap on top of the cam to keep the line in the cam jaws. Put the cam on the top of the front crossbar; it hasn't caused problems with the jib sheet for me.
