Post subject:  Loose Spreader Arms

As I learn more about the Hobie 18, I have more questions. I am beginning to experiment with spreader rake based on the Berman Performance Manual. My question is: How loose should the spreader arms be? The diamond wires freely slide through the ends of the spreader arms. The connecting pins on the spreader arm and brace are fairly loose and allow the arm to move up and down. This can be tightened with rigging tape and as the diamond wires are tensioned. How much play should there be in the spreader arms/brace assembly? How easily should the diamond wires slide through the spreader arms? Should I set the spreader rake and tape it up tight or let there be some play and access to adjust the rake?

Your wires are too loose based on the description you give. The wires should require some pulling to get them off the spreaders. Tighten them with the turnbuckles until they just touch the mast at the height prescribed by Mr Berman. Once the wires are tight they will hold the spreaders correctly. You do need to protect the jib sail from the spreader ends by installing boots and rollers.
