Post subject:  Question on replacing main clew plate
The rivits that came with the main clew plate have me confused. All the rivits I've used in the past have a "stem" that feeds into a rivit tool, which pulls the "stem" expanding the rivit, then snapping off. These rivits have no "stem". So how do I install them? Thanks in advance.... I'm a Hobie 18 newbie :)
I'm also installing the new "twist and seal" hatch covers. They did not come with any hardware. I have already read up on the install here, just wondering if I should just go to the local harware store for stainless rivits, or order Hobie fasteners from the dealer....

Solid rivets take a special tool to set. Most lofts have them (we do...). In a pinch, I'd try using a large punch or nail set with a tapered end. Just make sure the rivet is against something sold like a vise. Go at it easy.

For the hatches, I'd head down to your favorite mom & pop hardware store for some #12 or 1/4-20 stainless steel screws and nylock nuts. Use backing washers, silicone sealant... And DON'T crank down on the screws.

Yes, if you tighten the screws too much the cover will not fit. Be sure to test the lid before the sealant cures.

I use 3M 4200 sealant, which is probably overkill but it works well

After cutting the deck and drilling the holes. Check everything as a dry fit. I then screwed the covers in the rings, caulked the rings and put them in place with the screws in the ring. Set a one gallon paint can on the covers for 24 hours. After the caulk is dry remove the paint can weight and unscrew the cover. Reach in and apply the washers and nuts, just snug. No leaks and the cover dosn't bind.

Post subject:  My thanks for the replies.
As it stands, I still have not completed this upgrade. My dealer sent me the wrong covers, admittedly by my own request. However, an experienced Hobie Cat sailor would have known better, and advised me otherwise. In fact, almost every order is a disapointment. They send me the wrong lines, wrong shackles, and the shock cord I have been buying from them does not hold up at all. Therefore I will be switching to a dealer who knows, like the one kind enough to reply above.

I like to sail hard, and I wreck something almost every sail. My Hobie Cat 18 needs some upgrades, but it is a riot to sail, and I am totally hooked, as are everyone I have taken out on it. The lake I sail on here really sucks, with its thick green algae water and totally unpredictable wind. And I still can't get back out there fast enough, but now I dream of a place that is clean, warm, and with reliable wind.

I have new screw in ports for my H18 on their way now. DVL, I like your suggestion about caulking and placing the ports in place with weight prior to fastening... Good tip, Thanks!

I'll have to take pictures of my vents I made. The hulls are dry all the time now. 1 1/2" pvc pipe in a spare pair of covers. I didn't want to post until I knew that the idea worked. :)
