Post subject:  Hobie Compass Warranty

I bought a new 2018 Hobie Compass as my wife/buddy kayak.
This is my third Hobie, I am on my second PA-14 and have always
been impressed with the quality of their products, yes they cost
more, but the quality has always been worth it.
My wife and I are heading too Florida in two weeks for fishing..
But I have a small problem.
I Picked it up 4/25 at ACK here in San Antonio
Got there just as it was getting ready to rain cats and dogs.
We unwrapped it in the rain and loaded it unto the Kayak rack on my Honda Element
Got home in a pouring rain and unloaded it onto the top of my
kayak trailer and put it in the garage.
Thursday I worked late, so didn't get to check it out.
Put the compass on a rack on Friday and I went fishing in my 2017 PA, got back in late!
Saturday morning I pulled the Compass out and in the sunlight I noticed that on
right side there were some strange shadows where the top and bottom are fused
together. I contacted ACK and they asked for pictures, sent them in. They
contacted me and said yes there was a problem but Hobie wanted pictures taken
inside the garage to get rid of the shadows. Took them and sent them in.
This kayak has sat on a rack since I got it, no mods, has seen no water except for the rain
nothing waiting to figure out what was going to happen. I have a Hobie Compass anchor
trolley, a rectangular hatch kit and some other Hobie stuff waiting on final disposition
so I can install them.
I have the Hobie Cradles coming for the Compass when it is on the trailer.
I Contacted ACK today and they said Jerry from Hobie said yes they can see what
I am talking about but they are not sure it is worth replacing the hull,
maybe offer some type of equipment credit.
I bought a Hobie because I have really appreciated their quality. I am kind
of wondering that since Hobie does not sale seconds or factory rejects why they
would think I should accept this. I mean $2000 dollars is a lot of money and
it's not a Wally World $300 cheapo Kayak made in a sweat shop in China either.
According to the Hobie warranty I have to work thru ACK, and by the way ACK has
been great in this.
So I guess my question is for Hobie... you shipped a Kayak that your QC appears to
have missed and it made it all the way to me the customer. How do we get this made
right?

Just my 2 cents. The statement about Hobie shipping the Compass like your pictures on the Hobie Compass Owners Facebook page show doesn't seem justified. That warping had to happen after it left the factory. Anyone with any attention to detail should have seen that if it was present before leaving the the factory looking at your pictures. If it existed when you picked it up from Austin Kayak it should have been noticeable to ACK or yourself. Not saying it wasn't there, but that is too much warping not to be noticed at the time you took delivery.

I agree with you about the warping way too much. Hobie apparently doesn't see it that way.
When I arrived at ACK the boat was still wrapped and was outside.
It was starting to rain (lightening and thunder and lots of rain)
We unwrapped it in the rain and did a quick check for the major components.
Then onto the rood rack, no ratchets were used.
Then home and unloaded onto a kayak trailer.
The first chance I got to really look at it was Saturday morning.
As soon as I saw the warping I was in contact with ACK.

The reason I posted this is because I need a definitive answer on what is going to happen
with this Kayak, so far no real answer.

I would expect that ACK should give you the final answer as they are the selling dealer. It is their responsibility to determine first if a replacement is in order and then decide whether they are going to do that on their own or inquire to the factory to request a warranty replacement. I hope you get a response soon.

Our warranty manager just spoke to you about this hull. I saw the photos. That is very odd and certainly unacceptable. It looks kinda like it was near a heat source and was deformed.

Matt, yes I talked with Jerry yesterday afternoon.
He is getting with Amy at ACK, now waiting to see what they say.

If it was a heat source I'm not sure where the heat source would have come from.
Boat was unwrapped behind ACK in San Antonio, went straight onto my Honda Element
Kayak rack, using the straps and tie downs that came with it ( no ratchet tie downs ).
From there went onto the top shelf of my trailer and into the garage, no tie downs.
After that it has been stored in the garage on saw horse's, waiting for this to be resolved.
There are no heat sources in my garage.

I learned something very valuable from all of this, don't pick up kayak in the rain!
Go over every inch of it with a fine toothed comb before you leave dealership.
