Maybe something should change because these straps are not strong enough. These are pictures of three different kayaks with owners weighing less than 90kg. ![]() ![]() ![]() For the moment, we found a cheap solution that I think will benefit other people who have similar issues. There was a problem with materials the vendor was using to mold the hooks which was corrected. Any broken hook is covered by warranty. |

Thanks Matt, what is the part number of this part, because I only find straps for old Hobie seats? If only the hook is changed then the strap will have to be stitched because otherwise it can not be changed. I suppose it should be something like this: 81259001 SEAT STRAP w/HOOK |

My dealer gave me a replacement pair he just received from Hobie. The straps are in an unlabeled bag with the part # 81701019 hand written. I broke one last week and he took one off of his in stock compass's so I now have a spare pair. Dave |

Is a running change... no indication of exactly when it happened. |

We have one Compass in our rental fleet and have broken the original two straps as well as two of the four replacements sent to us. While we have two intact hooks at the moment we cannot send it out on rental as we have no faith they will last more than an hour. It is very frustrating to have a useless boat and no indication of when proper replacements will ship. |

Unfortunately changes in design, parts production does take some time. I believe new hooks are here or very soon will be. |

Matt how will we know when this happens and how do we get the new ones. Currently I'm hesitant to go far from my launch point. The last time my bracket broke I had to pedal 2 miles sitting upright holding the base of the seat. Dave |

You can use line as a backup for the hook. Tied through the strap and the eye. New straps would be received via warranty claim. |

Matt do we have to wait to break a hook to get a replacement? If improved units are available I'd like to get them and not have to go through the breakage scenario. I'd have much more confidence to go farther from my launch point. I feel that new straps should be supplied to all Compass owners! I don't feel that we should have to go through the breakage scenario to get updated straps. Regards Dave |

They are not available. Failure is somewhat limited. We are not seeing a high percentage. Once we have complete straps and hook assemblies... will take some time to manufacture... we will let dealers know. |

FYI... There is a HIGH probability that the reason the hooks and possibly eyes are breaking on some of these boats is related to the hook "capsizing" on the eye when not loaded. The hook may be inverted when the seat is then loaded which causes an unnatural load on both parts. Check the alignment of the hook in the eye before pushing back on the back rest. |

Matt, please provide a photo of the "proper way" to load the hook to the eye per your "hooks capsizing on the eye" comment. Also, I agree with Dave that it is very unsettling to go out several miles offshore and worrying about the seat strap or padeye breaking, I have a bad back so it will be bad for me to peddle back with a loose seat. Finally, Hobie should be sending us the replacement parts, once they are available, shipped by the dealers since they have our mailing address before the item actually break and we have to submit a replacement under warranty. Good customer service would be to send replacements, once they are available, before they break on a customer kayaking far offshore. Customers can replace the parts and have peace of mind that the product is reliable. Thanks. |
