So I'm probably going to order a new Compass for next season but I'm torn between the regular and the Duo. I'm not fishing and only using the kayak on a lake for recreational peddling and sailing. The question is: how good is the Compass Duo for these two activities if done with only one person? Is there much of a difference using the kayak with one person from two?

Thank you

You just need some weight in the front for balance. All weight aft can make the bow ride too high. No problem pedaling it with one person.

The Duo can be used solo. I prefer to use ballast in the front. I put a livebait tank and a cooler instead of the front seat. So roughly half my weight. Too much and it submarines. Sailing works too but it's far from ideal. Solo and without ballast it can be done by constantly pedaling but it loses a lot of waterline length and if you stop the slightest breeze will push it around.

So the TL;DR is Yes but use ballast in the front.

Kind of a late reply but this was a question I had before I bought mine April 2019. Then I just winged it and somehow it worked.
