At age 71 I decided to take the plunge and try kayaking for fishing/recreation/exercise. I got burned for a little on Craigslist but wound up with a carbon fiber paddle, nice Malone rolling cart, soft roof rack I didn't need and a kayak with unrepairable damage.. Justin at Southwest Outfitters in lake Havasu has now set me up with a 2020 Compass coupled with an older Mirage drive with turbo fins. A few extras in the deal like Gill dry bags, Gill soft cooler, Yakattack rod holder, etc.

I'm currently awaiting the arrival of the Compass loader and side handles for getting it in an out of my truck and the water. In the meantime I'll install a Berley Bro keel guard on the bow this weekend.

Can't wait to start some new adventures on Lake Mohave and the Colorado River soon!

No Compass loader yet but I tried to take it out on the lake Sunday. First pedal stroke, the drive broke (it's a 2011 drive). Justin at Southwest Outfitters couldn't figure out how it failed the way it did so he called Hobie and they were surprised the screw pulled all the way out of a fin without tearing any rubber. They agreed that on a drive that old a repair would require finding scavenged parts from somewhere and not worth the time and money. End result: they sold me a brand new basic Mirage Drive off a Passport 10.5 on the sales floor for $300. I wasn't interested in the 180 or the extra money that would have cost.

I'll be trying this again this weekend. I'm really frustrated. For now I just want to be able to launch and enjoy a kayak!

Finally! Got the Compass out on Lake Mohave for a couple of hours today. The kayak and the Mirage drive were perfect for me. I'm really impressed with how easy it is to pedal and it does well paddling too. The rudder was particularly impressive. After a few sessions of learning some deep water recovery I should be ready to try my hand at fishing from it.

After the first two fiascos I'm very happy I stuck with it. The third time WAS the charm!
