Can anyone tell me if there is a difference between the very old hobie 16s and slightly newer models? I have recently brought back from the dead a very old hobie 16. Which seems to float much lower in the water than what I remember. Granted I am a few pounds heavier than I was 15 years ago but only about 10. Under full press with one hull out of the water the leeward hull is as near as I can tell under water. The is enough water going over the hull to push the tiller bar off the rudder. There is not any obvious major repairs although the hull has been painted. I don't really have any means to weigh the boat currently but it is not obviously heavier than any other I have hefted. Any thoughts? thanks Shawn |

on the 80s Hobie started to make lighter hulls. I don't know how much light. |

Right... 1984 saw the Boat weight go from 340 plus down to 320. Old boats may have water in the hulls. |

Matt, When you refer to water in the hull are you talking about an accumulation within the substance of the fiberglass or are you refering to the leakage during a day of sailing? This boat sat for many years in a field in the sun in a pretty dry area of california but there is some rain in the winter would that be enough to substantially change the displacement? Am I remembering incorrectly with regards the displacement. I don't know of anyone else with a hobie to compare to but the Pilons have a sheet of water going around them to the point that the aft portion of the leeward hull appears to be under water. Is that normal? Crew weight would total to around 350 pounds and this is only noticable when flying the windward hull. Thanks Shawn |

The foam blocks inside can get saturated over time as can other materials. Only way to tell is to weigh the boat to see what you have. At 350... the boat is going to bury on some sail angles quite a lot. That is normal. Racing weight on the 16 is 285. P.S. The displacement on the 16 never changed. The added hull weight and crew weight is the difference... plus your memory of younger (lighter body) days! ![]() |
