| Post subject: | Hobie 16 Comp Tip |
Hey Everyone, Just purchase an 82 Hobie 16 in nice shape. Only issue is the comp tip (see Photo). Any idea if it's a problem. If so can it be fixed or should it be replaced. Thanks Steve [/url]

Doesn't appear to be big enough / deep enough to affect it structurally. If you want it to look better, take some black Marine-Tex and smooth it over. I'd be more concerned about the plastic sail track - it looks like it's been bent so it doesn't line up with the aluminum track. Could be a real bear to raise the sail. |

I had a similar problem several years ago due to a crack repair at the top of the aluminum section. The comp tip leaned slightly aft. The sail went up okay but got pinched every time I tried to bring it down. It got real annoying turning the boat on its side every time to free it.

It lines up but it's closed. The two halves touch. Is this correct? Thanks |

Thanks Having a tough time with the visual here. How about a picture of the track at the intersection of the Comptip and the aluminum extrusion? If what you mean is that the two sides of the Comptip track touch, that's definitely a problem. |

Look at the gap between the sides of the aluminum track (3/16")compared to the sides of the Comptip track (0"). It looks like the mast was lashed down on the Comptip track, forcing the sides together. You'll have a bear of a time getting the sail up / down. Note to everybody: Never, ever store the mast resting on the plastic track! Always store the mast with the track facing up! You need a new plastic track - or at least about 18" of one. It's not hard to replace - you just snap the old one off and snap the new one on. |

Where's Jeremy when you need him? Time for my weekly rant Matt? Looks like your nearest dealer is either Fastlane in San Diego or me according to the dealer finder. |
