I have an '83 with shrouds that need replacement. I'm reluctant to buy new ones from the factory because, as I understand it, the lengths are now different. My current shrouds are 19' 1". I can't find anywhere that sells the molded covered shroud like I have now, and I really like those. Is there anywhere to get shrouds made for older hobies? I know more mast rake is better, but I like the way mine sails and I don't really want to start messing with that. Thanks |

Currrent stock shroud is 18' 11" (soon to be coming as 18' 10 1/4" - 2009 H16) 18' 11" current shroud is just 2" shorter than yours. Unless you are at the top two holes in the current setting ... this is a none issue. Simply adjust the length using the shroud adjusters. 2-3 holes higher using the new shorter shroud. If not enough room... change to 10 hole adjusters. |

OK guys and gals... I just got off the phone with Matt. As he had alluded to last year, there are some wire length changes to the 16 for 2009. And we just figured out that there's no marking on the labels to differentiate between old lengths and new lengths. So because of how parts are stocked at Hobie and probably by most dealers, you could end up with two different lengths when you buy shrouds, bridles or trap wires. The dimension on the bridle is the most significant change. So if you buy a pair, you might want to make sure they're the same length. |

thanks for the heads up Dog. I'm sure we are like yall, we order 20 or 30 at a time and they get put on the H16 shroud hook and back stock bin. |

Tomhuntington - I got my 19'¼" shrouds from Murrays a few years ago for my 1979 H-16. www.murrays.com 800-786-7245 I got mine through our Hobie Dealer, but you can contact them direct if you need to. You can get them black or white coated; double swaged. Good luck! |

Over the years we have accommodated sailors desires for more mast rake. The 2009 model year marks the first significant change since 1995. The new specifications have been well tested and are intended to make the US and Australian new-boat product identical. These new specs will be carried over into the parts department stock of replacement H16 wires, so dealers should be aware of the details. The most significant of the changes involves bridle wires. These are now longer by 1 1/8†|

Short answer - mast rake. |

I guess I still do not get it as the amount of mast rake has not changed much in the last few years, actually the trend has been a little less rake for more power. |

Listen. I had the same problem. I just re-rigged my 71 h16. i bought factory shrouds and had a lot of problems at first. To start off i couldnt even get the mast even close to up. Then i found out i had a shroud as the forestay and the forestay as a shroud. Im retarded. Fixed that problem and still coouldnt get my mast up. So i bought the 10hole shroud adjusters (vs. the 7hole i had). After that everything worked good. The mast is raked back alot further now but apparently that is good? Why is that people. I havent had any problems with it. It just kind of looks scary. With my old rigging the mast would pop down all the way into the mast perfectly. Now it goes into the mast base but it doesnt lock into it like it used to with the longer rigging. |

The trend in Worlds has been for more mast rake. This change simply makes it easier to attain max rake. You want to move the mast forward? simply use higher holes in the shroud adjusters. |

Ok am I missing something here? Mast rake is obtained by the jib halyard. Right? After jib is set the shroud adjustment is only to take up the slack in the shrouds. Right? With my 07 boat I can easily get block to block with the main sheet so why does one need or want longer bridle or shrouds? I do however completely agree with shorter trap wires, when I have my mast raked pretty far aft I can't get enough adjustment to keep a little tension on the shock cord. |
