I'm wondering if my top most batten on main is too tight.

In light winds, the whole of main sail has nice curved shape, but the very top batten and the sail around it remains kind of flat. It is a rather striking difference in the sail's shape. Does it mean the batten is too tight?

If anything, it means it's too loose.

The top batten should be tapered to be a bit more flexible.

Oops...

Thanks for explanation, Matt.

And forgive me for asking this of the 100th time (I suppose this has been discussed somewhere here already) where should it be tapered and how?

The top batten comes tapered from the factory.

If it's not, then the sides should be sanded down (belt or disc sander) so that the "hump" on both sides is completely gone at the root (leaving the center) and tapering back approximately the entire length of the batten so that the trailing tip is full thickness.

This is for the top batten only!
