Post subject:  chine protection
I run a shop and just made some aluminum extrusions for a customer, I was wondering if anyone has ever put anything on a hobie to protect the chine. I think this stuff would work. Everyone I've spoken to seems to have a problem with the hulls on their older boats and when I bought my 16 it was beach worn on the botttoms. is this a plausable "Forever" fix?

Yes. Many types of materials (PVC, aluminum, etc.). None have proven to be practical.

Part of the problem is adhesion. Another is the transition area bewteen the Keel Cap (one brand name developed for this) and the hull.

It's also just too easy to rebuild the bottoms with fiberglass and / or use beach wheels to prevent it from happening in the first place.

BTW, it is properly called the "keel". A chine is the hard intersection of the sides and bottom of a boat.

What about those heavy duty vinyl strips? My parents have some of that stuff on the bottom of their power boat, and it seems to adhere fine. It's just a big roll of thick vinyl tape.

nowheres as of yet. i just bought a boat in indy without a trailer a few weeks ago and i'm welding up a trailer and rehabing the boat, hoping to be ready come spring. I apriciate all the info.

Oh yeah. check for soft spots on the boat...would hate to see you fix it up and then have to go back and fill in soft spots.
