Will someone please explain me the following?

If a gust hits, what is the best thing to do - to release main sheet or let the traveler out? Working the main seems much easier (sailing solo)...

And if I'm mixing things and asking wrong questions, then please explain this too.

Thank you!

Yes, the mainsheet is the primary line to hold / release.

Ease the traveler if you are flying a hull and not fully sheeted. Better speed with the traveler out a bit and sheet tighter.

Plus, when you are releasing in a puff, you really want it to release. Sometimes if there is any pressure on the traveler, it doesn't move when released. you end up kicking the boom to get it to move out.
I know all you guys with the newer boats have better luck with your travelers, but some of us sail on a budget that doesn't include upgraded or new traveler bearings. I love kicking my boom and swearing. I sail for the relaxation and stress release. There's nothing like kicking something to make you feel better. Preferably an inanimate object.

Or the less preferred method, steer through the puff.....

No, man. I go sailing specifically not to feel like I want to kick anything. No matter how tough my day or week has been, once I hear water under the hull or hulls everything is not important any more. :D

That kicking bit was all said "tongue in cheek" folks. Believe me, I "groke" the Zen of sailing. Gentle breeze, whisper of water, brassy light, Oh yeah, I'm there!
