I've got some strange wear on my mast base. The stop "wings" (for lack of a better technical name) have gotten hammered. It is as if the mast is trying to over rotate and climb on top of the apposing stops on the front crossbar. My guess is that I'm not getting enough tension with my factory 1977 jib halyard system. With a little muscle, I can get my blocks to kiss and bring the power to the back when moving fast. Perhaps I'm getting too much mast rake and allowing the mast base to climb over the stops. The aluminum is really abused on the mast base and logic tells me to apply more tension to my jib halyard to keep the mast more forward. Do I need a "Aussie" style jib halyard to apply more initial forward tension?? |

Maybe you need to consider changing your mast base. |

It's the mast step casting that needs replacing. The mast step has changed at least twice since 1977 (most recently in 2003) to allow more mast rake and prevent the rotation stops from overriding. |
