Post subject:	How to repair Jib around copper plate, new to hobie
January 1st: I tried to sew on a patch, after taking the rivets out, its impossible!~ Not by hand, way too thick,. and you'd need a sewing press to get through! Any suggestions how to get the patch on?? Thanks again Sebastian Hello! I'm 16 and rather new to Hobie sailing. My dad and I bought a Hobie 16 at the end of the summer, and did some cold sailing till we had to pull it out, and now I'm at the repair and restore stage I got the boat for 500, so, it wasn't in 100% amazing condition, it has two large (at least 15 inches) soft spots in both front pontoons. And the Jib is tearing around the large copper plate... everything else has been repairs... How do I repair the sail and prevent it from ripping further (its only about 1, and 2 centimeters from bottom and top resp..)? the copper plate is rather.. in the way. is it removable? Also any tips on the epoxy repair method... I think I got how to do it (looked aroundt he forums ) but couldn't find a definite depther of the foam, which I'd like to know so I can prevent myself from drilling the inner Hull. Otherwise, the Hobie sailing is AMAZING!!!! I took my friends otu and had them on the hiking lines, and even had the hull come (only an inch) out ofthe water! - note this was still really exciting! welcome to the world of Hobies! You can drill out the rivets that hold the plate on, make the repair then re rivet it back on. I'm going to let someone else chime in on the repair I've not done one in years someone else will be of more help. To fix the sail properly you need to take off the clew plate by drilling out the rivets. You will then need to sew a new clew patch on. The clew patch is the extra cloth (Dacron) around the corners of the sail. Then you need to re-rivet the clew plate back on. That's a ton o work for a sail as old as yours. A sailmaker would do it for about $100. The better option would be to search the forum for an old used $50 jib. The guys who race have old sails that are basically trash to them and I'm sure they would be happy to sell you one for cheap.

Thanks, I'll probably go with taking the rivets off and reriveting it. the sails are matching tequila or whatever the colorstyle is, and are really nice otherwise (as far as I know, i suppose the age affected them alot) but good to hear that its possible, can I get the rivets at a local hardware store do you think? and still anyone know the depth between the two hulls is? Thanks a bunch Sebastian

I recommend getting a job clew repair kit from Murrays Marine's on line store. They have the new clew plates, plus the rivets.

A newer Jib would be thrifty fix for your problem or the fix from murrays is a good idea if the sail is in good shape I did the soft spot on my 14 and on my friends 16 this summer A forum idea was to use a drimell tool and a small grinding wheel to make the holes use a bent nail to open the foam at the holes The main idea when drilling the holes is to go really slow if you go all the way thru use marine tex to fix hole I put my git-rot in the refigrator to allow a little extra time In the 16 repair we found water in the foam I wish we had allowed this to dry. Repair went OK with the hulls better than new Be careful on those hulls Do not let people jump from the tramp down on the hulls. I do not allow anyone to walk down the center of the hull all feet go over the edges when walking also bew careful when straping to the trailer Gary
