Post subject:  Hobie 16 Wires Advice

Hi Folks,

I'm going through my just purhcased Hobie 16. I think it's a '79, and a friend at work suggests I consider replacing the shrouds and forestay wires, especially if they look old.....he lost a shround wire sailing once... and was very unhappy.

I plan to replace the shrouds, but was wondering if I should replace the forestay with the "aussie" jib halyard setup verses the stock wires....

Any advice/experience/suggestions.

P.S. This is for recreational use....no current plans to race.

Many thanks.

Dan in Vermont...

I recommend a H16 rig kit which will replace all standing rigging, new jib halyard and single trap. This kit is less that $180 and will save you a lot of trouble in the future.

I hate to bring up a really old thread, but where can I find an "H16 rigging kit"? I just got a 1982 Hobie 16 and I want to replace the bridle, shrouds, and forestay. The trap wires will need to be replaced too but then can wait.

Wow! That is 230% price increase in 8 years (28% per year) !
No wonder I've been feeling poorer in the last decade...

I just ran the #'s it does seem high, quick glance at the catalog the 6 wires run about $185. I've asked Matt for a build list to see what else it comes with beside the 6 wires, I know it use to come with some extra stuff but when the price jumped I stopped stocking it and don't remember.
