Awe, the snow is finally beginning to melt. I have slowly been putting together some spring upgrades (Aussie jib halyard, mast base/tang, rudder stiffening wafers, among other things...it's an old cat). I've hit several stumbling blocks. 1. how long is the jib sheet line...12'?, and what it the desired diameter? 2. I think I can get some more time out of the old tramp with a grommet kit and some stretch shock cord lacing...how many feet do I need if I'm doubling the amount of grommets on the rear (aft) of the tramp. They are originally spaced about 6" apart. It's sort of an ambiguous question. Perhaps these numbers are out there some where, but I had trouble finding them. I just don't want to short myself. Don't bother. I cut some out of the side of a 5gal bucket using a hole saw. The ones that hobie sells are kinda a joke. I bought some, and they are really thin, and really small in diameter. |

we use 1/4" on the jib sheet, 32' I believe. 5/16 will work but is kinda over kill for the 16 jib, 1/4 runs thru everything better. I'm not sure on the grommet question but the Hobie grommet kit comes with more than enough to get the job done w/some extras left over. rear lacing cord lengths is 15' per side and the center is 20. |

1/4" line is probably the right choice for racing but consider your crew. I race with my daughter and she needs the larger 5/16" It is a little easier on the hands over a weekend of racing. |

The March 1997 "On The Wire" issue had a good article on "Towards the "No Slop" Rudder" by David Hall. I cut 3" diameter shims out of one gallon plastic milk jugs and they work great. http://www.thebeachcats.com/OnTheWire/h ... ature1.htm |
