My jib halyard is currently in the top hole of the forestay adjusting plate. (I have not been out yet this year). What changes depending on which hole you attach the jib tack to. And the same question for where the jib blocks attach to the clew of the sail. Mine has always been in the center hole. What does going up or down the holes change? Is there a desirable combination? I am working to get more rake than I had last year. Currently the side shrouds reach easily to the 2nd from the bottom hole in the shroud chain plate. Since I am not fully set up, I don't know if this will be too much or too little rake. I have a 87 with batten sail and old springy thingy travelers. As always I await your helpful insights. |

Knowing that there are much more knowledgable 16 sailors that will weigh in on this subject I would still like to offer my observations: Acheiving max rake is simplified by having 2 chain plates for the forestay allowing me to attach the shrouds on the lowest setting possible. This appears to help the boat point better and with the weight further aft helps reduce the tendency to pitch pole. I like attaching the jib on the highest hole on the lower chain plate to raise the jib as much as possible. I attach the jib sheet to the clew plate typically in the middle hole. The only time I adjust is if I notice the tension on the foot and leech of the jib is uneven. |

With newer boats and jib(higher cut at the clew) the lower you can attach the jib tack and still get good leech tension the better.Mine is typically two or three up from the bottom. With my older boat and sails(1985) I had to attach the tack right at the top of the forsetay chain plate.I also used a lage shackle to give me more space between the jib clew and the front forestay. |
