Where to tie off the Easy Rite line

Post subject:  Where to tie off the Easy Rite line
I recently purchased the Easy Rite line. The instructions indicate to tie off the line to the top of the rudder castings. I did this, but my immediate concern is that the constant back and forth of the rudders will soon damage the line. Does anyone have alternate tie off points or methods for the Easy Rite line.

I took my buddy's boat out yesterday and I found that the hitch he used at the top of the rudder casting also hinders locking the rudders down. An alternative I use on my boat is to drill a 5/16" hole in the deck lip an inch or two inboard from the rudder casting. Tie a 18-24" piece of 1/4" line to the righting line with a double sheet bend, run the 1/4" line through the hole you drilled and put a stopper knot (figure eight) in it.

I just mad a small loop of 1/4 rope that went through the rudder casting and tied the righting line to that. that gets the not away from the rudder . I have had to replace the small 1/4 rope once but have had the boat for about 30 years. I do like the idea of a hole for it also.....Jay

Thanks! Good ideas. I would rather replace a small piece of line instead of the Easy Rite line. I am leary about drilling into the deck lip but may try that. I know the rudder pin goes through a hole in the deck lip so it should not be a problem.

The deck lip is extremely strong. After all, it retains your shroud and bridle wires. I drilled a small pilot hole from the bottom up first to ensure the hole is in the middle. Or you could just line it up with the rudder pin hole.

I have drilled a hole in the hull lip and i have used a tie to the rudder pins both work pretty good

I used to have an old (80's vintage) easy-rite on my boat. It had a small piece of 1/4" line which tied around the rudder pins below the deck lip. I got tired of the bungee sagging and switched to a Hawaiian style system. On my 14, I just carrya length of 1/2 inch line coiled on the front pylons.
