I went down the marina the other day to do somework on my boat and was greeted with a very unpleasent suprise. Some idiot left their still-burning cigarette butt on my left hull. The cig burned a small black spot on the deck of the hull in the gelcoat. I tried to wash it away but it seems to have burnt into the actual gelcoat. Its not deep but it is there and it looks like crap. What can i do to fix this. Did this guy ruin my gelcoat in that spot? Any ideas?? I will try to take a picture of it next time i go down to the marina |

try to buff it out, should take the black out, but you will probably have a divit, might have to do a little gell coat repair, i would be pissed too. |

I went to the beach yesterday to go sailing. I put my umbrella up and, as I unfolded my chair, realized there were cigarette butts all around me. Smokers are scumbags.

Is the damaged gelcoat on a smooth area, textured, or both? The May / June issue of the HOTLINE has a repair article covering nicks and dings in the gelcoat. If you can't buff the burn out of the gelcoat try some FSR or maybe even some Acetone. If the chemicals don't help the next step would be 320 / 400 / 600 grit sandpaper (and then buff). If all of this doesn't do the trick read the HOTLINE repair article and go that route. (Basically treating the burn as a gouge, or chip) If you need some advice beyond the article feel free to email me at [email protected] .
