Post subject:  Forestay Adjuster Pin Popout

All,
I have had a recurring problem and I hope someone can point me to a pin that won't fail.
Twice now, my clevis pin has popped out of the forestay adjuster while out on the water. Fortunately, my jib was carrying the load so the mast did not crash down. It almost did, however. I was going to lower my jib when my wife noticed the forestay dangling down on the mast.
As I stated, this is the second time. The first time, I had just righted it from pitchpoling and the pin popped then, as well.
I was originally using a ball pin to hold the forestay in, but after it came out after the righting, I changed to a clevis pin with a hinge pin. I couldn't believe that the hinge pin came out. I could probably solve this by using a clevis with a ring ding, but it would be a real pain to try and put a ring ding in when the adjuster is over your head, while the boat is on the trailer.
Does anyone have a suggestion on what type of capture pin I can use to hold my forestay? If you could also point me to a supplier, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks in advance!

Use a 1/4 bow shackle if you can't tolerate the ring-ding.

Use the pin of the shackle through the forestay adjuster. You can put the forestay on the pin, or on the bow of the shackle.

I don't understand the problem you have with using a ring on a pin. If someone is helping you raise the mast, they can place the pin in the forestay and adjuster and, once the pin is there, just install the ring. If you raise the mast alone, try tying a line to the jib halyard and to the bridle. Once the mast is up, lean into it, reach down and tighten the jib halyard. When that is done you can get off the tramp and install the pin and ring. The forestay adjuster is being held up where connecting the forestay is simple.

The problem with using the ring-ding is that my wife is "vertically challenged" and while I raise the mast, she puts the pin in . While the boat is on the trailer, the forestay adjuster is probably 5 1/2 feet high off the ground. This requires her to reach up over her head to put the ring ding in the clevis. Those ring dings are not easy to put in even at a normal height. Trying to put one into the adjuster that is over your head is pretty difficult. I tried to get her to stand on the trailer and put the pin in but she is always losing her balance.
I guess I could bring a small ladder for her to stand on, but I was hoping for a simpler fix. I am going to locate a shackle with a captive pin and see if that is more secure.
Thanks!
