No real way to age the boat by sail number. I can guess if the sail was original... later 70's.

Serial number location: http://www.hobiecat.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=1155

Since 1973 the serial numbers on Hobie Catamaran sailboats has been located on the transom or rear of each hull. The number is hand-engraved using a vibration tool. The number is on both hulls of a catamaran. You can rub a small amount of graphite or soil into the serial number engraving to make it easier to read. Serial numbers use the following format: (example CCMB2345H989) Some older boats have had serial numbers engraved in a vertical direction parallel to the rudder pin.

For boats that are older than 1973, a four digit number was used. the number was stamped into the forward plyon post on the outboard side. The plyon posts are what the trampoline is supported by above the hulls.

15803 would be from the mid-70's - about 1975/76

It should have a hull number on the transom if that's the case.

I also bought a H16 that appeared to have its numbers painted over. The paint job on the boat was awful so I stripped the hull down and was able to scrape the paint off the numbers.
I am pretty sure that all Hobie hull numbers are on the right hull, on the transom about an inch down from the deck. Don't sand the paint, but scrape it off with something sharp. I used a wood chisel!
When I purchased the boat, I was told it was a late eighties model. It turned out to be a 1980.
After the paint, she's a beaut!
