I am new to the hobie forum and wanted to thank all of you for the great info on this board. I have been lurking here for a while and sucked up all the info i could before purchasing my boat. I have been sailing hobie 16s since i was 11 and stopped about 15 years ago because i became too busy. i finally decided to get one again and looked at alot of turds! There is alot of junk out there! One guy beat me to a 81 hobie i thought might be nice.. when i got there he had already bought it and he had no clue what he was getting! I kept searching and found a 1978 Hobie 16 in michigan. (i live in ohio). The gentleman i bought it from was the original owner and had kept it in his garage when not sailing it! if i can figure out how to post photos i will show you how perfect she is and i love the old school colors! anyway thanks again. Oh my goodness. Your new boat looks just like the '81 I'm looking at. It's beautiful. Looks like you have the Keoke pattern: http://www.fleet297.org/PDFs/H16_Sail_Patterns.pdf The one I'm going to look at tomorrow is the Gonzo color scheme with the same sail colors as yours: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=13507 Looks like you're having a great time already with your new addition. P.S. - I totally understand how frustrating it is trying to find a Hobie 16. Most of what seems to be perfect for us and in the right price range is out of state as well. The ones in my own state are way more expensive then the nicer ones out of state. |

A matching orange tramp?! Nice. It looks like you scored a good boat. |

Thank you. The tramp is like it is brand new! The whole boat is like in a time warp. The sails dont have a stitch out of place. |

The original Keoke had mocha-colored hulls, either a very light tan or a somewhat darker tone for the later ones. I owned Keoke 33556 from '78 - '84. Bought new. I had the lighter colored hulls. |

How wonderful you got a mint condition vintage Hobie. It's great when an owner loves and cares for his boat. You must be having a blast. We'll be looking at two Hobies today. One Hobie is being sold as a package with a vintage Sunfish in excellent condition. This Hobie 16 is an '80 with yellow hulls. The other Hobie 16 is the '81 with the Gonzo hulls. |

Where are you sailing in Ohio? Your picture looks like you might be sailing at East Fork. At least that's my guess if you're in the Cincy area....... There are a group of us that hit Hueston Woods every Sunday to race. |

I bought that Keoke boat in Elkhart last summer. Basically bought it to get the trailer so I could buy a very nice yellow hull tequila sunrise boat that did not have a trailer in Indiana also. Sorry to say he kept the boat outside, uncovered. Luckily the sails were kept inside. We are going to restore the boat this summer. The TS boat is running great, we sailed it last summer. Registration is 77889. We need to do a repair on the inside of the starboard pontoon on the Keoke boat. I need battens, bits and pieces, all the stays need to be replaced, etc. All original hardware, original tramp too, all wrecked by the weather and sun. Pontoons might clean up if we can properly patch the hole (luckily on the port side of the stbd pontoon so it does not show). Should be fun to get it going again. The hulls are mocha, and if I recall correctly even the tramp is mocha or brown. We call it "That 70's Boat". I need to get some super short trunks, grow a huge mustache, to get into the whole vibe for that boat. Having the Keoke boat's mast fixed up right now, replacing the busted downhaul cleat, and the cheek block which was shot from the sun. RP |

79 Keoke update. Checked the serial number. It is a Feb 79 boat. Mocha hulls, orange tramp, keoke sails, black anodized frame, mast and boom. The tramp was a lost cause. I've salvaged most of the running rigging (blocks, etc) - the sheets are long gone. Powerwashed off the old chewed up stripes and dirt, removed the old tramp. Dad (also a Hobie fan) will work on the boat this week sanding the goofy Bondo job someone did on the inside of the stbd ama, we'll see what kind of work is needed there and patch if needed. Then use PoliOx to remove oxidation from the hulls, Poliglow's cleaning product, and then 5 coats of Poliglow. Probably going to get an orange tramp to go completely back to the future. Need to gently clean the main a bit. Unfortunately prior owners left the sail rolled up in the sun, bottom two panels of the main are faded. Jib looks great (probably was rolled up inside the main). Anyone have a line on a new or gently used Keoke main? RP |

I wish you luck with your project. last year there were some keoke sails for sail on ebay for like 300.00. I am kicking myself for not buying them. post some pics, i would love to see your boat. |

This looks to be a Keoke H14 main...probably enough material to make into a H16 jib (jibs?) Just noticed it so I thought I would post it in case someone is looking for fabric (I have no connection to the seller and no way of knowing whether the condition is actually like new) http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/boa/1760159665.html |
