Post subject:  Performance/behavior in different wind speeds

Newbie- just got a used Hobie 16 Saturday, first sail Sunday on the Long Island Sound was great. It was good that the winds were pretty tame (5-6 mph?) because I could get my feet wet under pretty tame conditions, but I did struggle with a tidal current (went out at mid-tide and me up with a down-wind current through a channel).

My question:
What can I expect from my boat under different conditions:

when can I single hand it (ie what range of wind conditions)
when will it be a casual sail, with everyone lounging on the tramp
when will the crew be working to keep the hulls down
when will the trapeze be crucial in getting the hulls to stay down

I assume I can back off from sheeting in the main to keep both hulls down and keep myself from tipping to a certain extent. Is there a wind speed where this is really not an option? I am 6'2" 205 lbs, my wife is 5'7", not exactly sure of her weight, in better shape than me, marathon runner.
Right now we just want to cruise around the Sound, pretty close to shore, check out some islands just off shore or go down the beach a little as we are new to the Hobie Cat (not new to sailing but not the most experienced daysailers)

Thanks

Crano,

The racing crew weight for a 16 is 285 lbs, so my guess is that you have that covered. As you might expect, there isn't a real solid answer for your question as your comfort with the boat, how you set it up and skill will help drive that. You need to sail in conditions you are comforable with, but let me take a shot at this

0-5 kts....you will float alot. Bring drinks
5-10 kts...comfortable sail, no worries. You will pass monohulls easily. can single hand easily, but doubt you will fly a hull. Bring drinks (especially if two of you)
10-15 kts...boat begins to come to life. As your comfort with the boat increases, you should still be able to control single handling the boat...but righting it if it capsizes will be a challenge single handling
15-20 kts...I would sail with 2 people. Boat will be a blast!
20-25 kts...You will definitely be working hard
25 kts...I drink at the bar

Yes working the sheets, but also setting up the boat will help you in different wind conditions. Raking the mast back will lose power, flattening the sails and adding downhall will also help you control the rig. I would suggest getting one of the catamaran sailing books by Phil Berman off the Hobie Catalog for more discussion on that. There used to be one specifically for the 16 as well, but I no longer see it online. Maybe your dealer will still have a copy

Have fun!

Thanks drej-

Very helpful.
Picked up a book on your advice: Phil Berman's Catamaran Sailing from Start to Finish, which was very helpful. We've been out a bunch of times in different conditions and are having a blast.
