Newbie here. I'm looking buying my first H16, and there are three 81 models and one 84 model. The owner of the 84 says that Hobie changed the "weighting" on the 84 model and that was the best year. What does he mean and is he correct? Thanks! Dan |

The boats were at 340 lbs or more until 1984. We lightened the boat to 320 in 1984 and still build it at that weight. |

Oh total weight. I thought it was some balance weight. Does that 20lbs really make a difference? Are there any other design changes that would really discriminate an 81 vs an 84? Thanks again, Dan |

In 1982 there were some changes to the mast step and mast base along with changes to the wire lengths. This allows more mast rake. The newer boats sail better, point higher. The '84 will be faster most likely. But this is all about racing. If you are sailing more recreational... not a big difference. |

Biggest difference (and worth it in my opinion) - the 1984 will have rake adjustable rudder castings, whereas the others will not. |

The stepping nub on the aft end of the mast base will interfere with the aft shoulders of the mast step. |

Sounds like I'll have to step the mast and play around with it. I think I have original step and base with new standing rigging. However I've never raked back all that much because I have the stacked mainsheet blocks. I'm going to convert those to the nonstacked configuration, so maybe rake will become an issue where it now is not. |
