2 or 3 piece tramp?

Post subject:  2 or 3 piece tramp?
My tramp is brand new and is a 2 peice. The only lacing is at the back. Seems to work very well.
This is nice as thre is no center lacing opening to allow sheets to fall through.
Ive noticed that Hobies tramp is originally 3 peice, so whats the difference?

what is better and why? Someone told me 2 peice tramps are racing tramps? true?

I think the best way to describe it is this....please someone correct me if I am wrong

I would opt for the 3 piece. The H16 sails fastest when the frame is very tight and the hulls very square. The tramp plays a significant role in maintaing both of those.

To get the boat that stiff, ideally, the sidebars should be deformed (bent inward) about 1 1/2 inches in on each side...something that is done when you lace up the center lacing. There are various ways to do that to get the boat that tight. You can buy a tool to tighten it or you can use your mainsheet blocks, wrapped round your sidebars, to deform them slightly...tighten the tramp...then release the blocks. I am sure a more detailed description is included elsewhere in the forum.

Rules say if not made by us... not class legal. We never made a two piece tramp for a Hobie 16.

Yes, the three piece tramp (standard issue on a 16) allows best tensioning of the platform.

He may be describing the "one-piece" tramp that was made by Hobie Cat for a short period of time in the early '90's. Technically, it is a "two-piece" tramp, since there's a lacing strip on the port side.

Since the lacing grommet strip was connected to the main body of the tramp (by a loose flap of material)... we considered it a one piece tramp. :)

I never had one, so I didn't know that particular detail. I think the only one I ever saw was at the '92 16 Nationals in Bear Lake, UT. Even then, most of the racers were dismissive of the concept, since you couldn't tighten it nearly as well as the conventional 3-piece tramp.

You're just blown away that I had a scan of the ad handy. :wink:

its very tight.

but where you are going.. is what i was wondering about...how does one tell if their boat is "square"

where are the proper points to measure?

Measure "square" from a bow tang bolt to opposite rudder pin then the opposite side. The difference between the measurements can be corrected by loosening the tramp and pulling the longer measurement shorter with some line (best to over correct a bit)... hold an re-tension the tramp.

Probably unless you glue the boat it is going to creep back to it's original configuration.Not really sure boat needs to be perfectly square.Mine I am pretty sure is not,measured when new,but still seems pretty fast (when sailed properly).

As long as the hulls are parallel the square of the boat shouldn't be that much of an issue as long as it is not excessive. If the two hulls are not parallel that would be a worse condition, they would "toe out" or "toe in", this will create drag and slow the boat down. My 85 16 was about 3/4" out of square and was like that the whole time I owned her, but she was tight parallel and fast.
