Post subject:  Hobie Lust, need advice!

My Dad referred me to Hobie 16s in conversation and expected me to forget about it in a week. 3 months later and I can't stop thinking about sailing one. (I think I've watched every Hobie video on youtube)

Can anyone point me in the right direction as far as renting a 16' in Texas?

I'm looking for a venue in Northern to Central to Coastal Texas that rents Hobies and would love to get some thoughts. So far I've had no luck finding any rentals. If anyone in the above areas is looking for an extra person to take out on a 16' or larger I would love the opportunity to go along and learn as much as possible. I grew up sailing with my father (Hunter 27, Cape Dory 30, and now a Tayana 37 with an upbringing on Optimists) but would love to get some time on a Hobie and get away from the monohulls!

Trying to figure out if this is right for me! Hope you guys can understand, many thanks for your time.

Call a local sailboat shop and ask them if they know any clubs in your area.
If you ever plan a trip to Houston a group of cats goes out of surfside almost every weekend
just check tcdyc.com to see if people are heading to surfside. You may want to ask on that website also try cat sailor.

Look up Hobie Fleet 23 based out of Dallas.

Also Look up the Texas City Dyke Yacht Club in Galveston.

Those are the two hotbeds of activity in your area, that I am aware of.

The local Dealer in Dallas is Mariner Sails

I believe there is also a Hobie Dealer in Austin.

If one of those three links doesn't get you "hooked up" with a contact that can answer your questions, come back here and we'll see what else we can find for you.

Fleet 23 still has a couple of events yet this year that you could attend and probably find someone looking for crew. That would get you out on a boat with a knowledgeable skipper, and you would be able to spend a weekend with a bunch of Hobie Sailors that could fill you in on a lot more local information.

Brent,

I second the idea of Hobie Fleet 23. I think Bob Johnson is the Commodor and a super nice fellow. Surely someone at HF 23 would be willing to help. The guys at Mariner Sails are great and helpful as well.
