The old mast base is more like a hook, the newer has a hole to put the pin through, why the difference, I have never stepped a mast with a hook, but my newer (older but nicer) boat has the hook style base, is it unsafe or doesnt work as well? |

The original mast stepping system used the hook in the base. You would hook under a pin across (Now holes) the step casting. The hook would be engaged until you were about 75% of the way up... not good, unless you kept pushing forward. The hook could release and the mast could come down. If you swayed left or right too far, you could break the hook off the base. Basically... not a good system. We now use the link between the two connections. Much more positive. |

IIRC the instructions for the new style link come with instructions on how to modify the base of the mast (I remember it required drilling a hole and grinding off some extra aluminum). Not sure what would need to happen to the the aluminum base on the X bar. (might need to be replaced with the new style base). If you trailer the boat a lot and therefor have to step the mast a lot - I would switch to the newer style set up. Patrick |

My boat obviously came with the old-school hook version. When I started using it a year ago, the hook was broken. ![]() When I purchased a new-style mast base to replace the old one (along with the hinge system) all I had to do was drill out the little bar on the step. The hinge works fine going through the holes that were left behind. ![]() |
