Hey this is my first post and I don't really know of all the correct terminology so bare with me. Problem #1. I lowered the mast the other day and the mast step(base) fell off. It had screws instead of rivets in it that weren't holding worth a crap. And now i see that the treads in the step that the dolphin striker screws into are gone too. I was thinking, tap the crossbar (crossbeam) that the mast base sits on then run some coarse thread bolts into it until I buy a new one. Problem #2. Can someone show a pic of how the trapeze return line or shock cord should be ran. I have dual trapeze. Problem #3. I last time I went sailing, the wind was nuts and we were flying a hull all over and then the inevitable happened. So as we were righting it, my friend had to climb on my shoulders and the hull now has a soft spot mid way down. So can I just put little holes that don't go all the way through and just inject epoxy? It's a foam sandwich right? Also how deep can I drill before all the way through? Thanks -Oleg |

Oleg, In response to your problems: Problem #1: I can't attest to the actual dynamics here, but I would get a new mast base and install that fairly quickly. I think the dolphin striker bears a lot of the force of keeping it place as it loads up with pressure for the wind. I am not sure I would want to sail the boat with just corse screws holding that in place. Problem #2: There are several pictures in recent threads of shock cords for a dual trapeze system. They are pretty cool including additional blocks to keep the line off of the neoprene the covers the cross bar. My shock cord attaches to a line that runs through a thimble (with a block) attached to the trapeze wire to my trapeze handle. It runs just run under the side cross bar (I use carpet, not neoprene on the crossbar) and attachs to the equivalent line on the other side of the boat. Total length of shock cord is 7 ft. Repeat with other trapeze. Basically the setup described in the rigging manual or you can see in the parts diagram of the Hobie catalogue. Problem #3: To repair the delam spot, you are correct. You want to drill through the top layer of glass but NOT go through the bottom layer. I don't know the exact measurement, but once you find it, put tape on the drill bit to mark how deep you should go so you don't go too deep. Good luck! |

The screws will wallow out the existing holes and make a legit repair down the road impossible. Search youtube for blind rivets and hobie. Something will come up. |
