I have a 1978 aluminum (no comptip mast).. When I went to raise it last weekend after not sailing it for 3 months, I noticed a bunch of water pouring out of a corroded hole where the old job halyard block is riveted on (At the base of the mast on the port side). After taking the block off, it appears there is just the one corroded area, about the size of an eraser tip, maybe a hair bigger. I know how to re-seal the mast, qustion is, is this is a high stress area of the mast wall, and how concerned should I be about this causing a structural failure of the mast under load? And, yes, I understand that a 30 year old mast may be past its prime... |

Not a big deal - if that's the only area that's corroded. Sounds like a rivet hole. How about a photo? |

Interesting enough I found 2 small holes on my 85 H16 mast in area of mast tang. They are not rivet holes and appears to be some type of corrosion pitting. A toothpick will barely fit each spot. I've has boat since it was new and it has happened in recent years. I sealed em up and keep an eye on em. Have a 84 H14 with same type of "pitting" inside of mast sail track area about halfway up. Possibly salt water corrosion from inside out???? Comments? |

I've been working late this week, but will get a picture this weekend. |
