Post subject:  Line vs. Wire Forestay

Might have overlooked it, but there doesn't seem to be any specific restriction on using line (i.e. dyneema, vectran, etc.) for the forestay of an H16. Given that it's only purpose is to support the mast when un-rigged (or when jib luff wire unexpectedly breaks), why not replace wire forestay with a synthetic line? Lighter weight, no chaffing on jib, easy to make / repair...etc. Thoughts?

It's not class legal, but I totally agree that it should an option. I have built a few synthetic forestays and they have the benefits that you've mentioned.

These are the only two rules I saw that related (see below). As long as the synthetic forestay was at least the same diameter & strength as 1/8" 7x19 wire, seems to me there's no reason it wouldn't be class legal.

General Rule 15.1

"Wires as supplied by the HOBIE CAT CO. shall not be reduced in diameter. They may be increased in size. All wires may be shortened or lengthened with exception of bridle wires."

Hobie 16 rule 5.2:

"Pigtails may be changed or altered to increase strength only. They must connect at the mast tang and the jib halyard block in the same manner as the HOBIE CAT CO. supplied boat (except when the jib halyard is modified according to 4.1a).

You missed General Class Rule #1:

Emphasis is mine. Basically, if it's not specifically allowed, then it's not class legal.
