Is McGuires high gloss polish any good? i've heard good things but never seen it used. Has anyone used it?

I use "Barkeeper's Friend" to scour the whole hull (power buffer and damp pad) and then wax with a once a year poly cream. Works great and my 1983 shines like crazy. It also sheds a lot of the scum and stays nicer longer. I also put the boat on the grass and tip it way up to do the inside of the lower hull. Makes it a lot easier to get some pressure on the buffer and really get the hulls white again. Good luck.

I thought you weren't supposed to wax your boat because it will cause it to bubble over time? Is this true?

Wax it! It will keep it from oxidizing as quickly, and as said above will make it easier to clean. I think the 'no waxing' phenomenon was started when racers would wetsand their boats to make them move through the water more efficiently. Doesn't make a noticeable difference in the real world. Protect the gel and wax it.

i used a three step process... i started with 3M super duty rubbing compound, then used a finesse it II finishing material, then sealed it with colinite #885, the boat had pretty bad oxidation, and now it is super glossy... it had that chalky white dull finish, but now i can see myself in it...

I also used a variable speed buffer with a compounding pad, 1600 rpm's.... for cost saving measures you could get away with using only the rubbing compound and the wax, and skip step 2.... very easy to do and improved it 99%... onlya few blemishes left...

I'm new to the hobie world... so their might be a better way, but this is what i was told by a person that i work with that restores boats to sell.... NO PAINTING... was his rule...

any questions ask... email is [email protected] i can send pics of before and after... i don't know how to upload on this site... sorry

I just ordered a couple cans of barkeepers friend... a lot cheaper than the 3m product. Will try it out - thanks

I ordered that 39.00 power buffer that has a link on here too. It's been shipped. But I won't probably try it until spring. Unless I get a decent weekend day and just try a spot.

Hey, thanks for uploading those for me... I thought i was computer savvy... but then again... haha...

yeah those pics are at different stages of the polishing, but the one where you can definitely see the contrast of glossy to matte was just after the first step of the 3M super duty rubbing compound...

all together I paid about 90.00 for all the chemicals... well worth it to me... a night and day comparison...

next up i'm going to try to clean all the aluminum.

thanks surf city for posting those for me...

what if you fear the the previous owner painted the hulls?

Ill have to have a closer look next spring, but if i take the paint off... and then follow the barkeeps cut and buff... will the original shine come back?

Probably. The paint probably protected it from further oxidation.
