Post subject: | Jib Car Controls |
I have two Hobie 16s,1980 and 1981 with the original jib car block. What should I upgrade these these to?I did upgrade one boat with the lance cleat to control the jib car and found them a bother more then an improvement.I am interested in upgrading both boats to current standards or something even better?Any ideas? Thanks Bill 404 21 SE |

To upgrade to current standards, you'd have to replace the front crossbar and corner castings, since the traveller tracks and turning blocks are integrated. Unless you're racing, there's really not that much of a need to upgrade, or even have a control system. It's just two extra lines you have to deal with. However, if you're determined, I recommend the TrenTec "plastic knuckle" style cars (#1552, page 22 in the Hobie Catalog), combined with the Jib Traveller Trim Kit (either #1071 or 1073, also page 22). I used that system for a number of years before integrated tracks and it works well. The plastic slides much better in the metal tracks and it's about as low profile as you can get. I prefer the lance cleats, since it reduces the clutter on the front crossbar (as opposed to the swivel cam cleats). Less stuff to take a chunk out of you when you go sliding forward in a pitchpole. |
