That's my winning auction. I tried it on 1978 hulls, it brought some life to the hulls, but nothing like I wanted. I'd say on newer hulls just starting to fade, it would help, but it won't replace the old fashion way of sanding with low grit paper, then polishing, then waxing. Save your money. But it does work on CD's and DVD's.

I recently tried Rubbing Compound (3m) on some hulls, and they look brand new! try it

My hulls are pretty bad, were originally yellow but they are really faded. I started sanding with low grit paper and maybe got impatient so kept upping the grit. After giving it some with 220 the original color is coming through but very blotchy. The blotches are a darker color and seem to be stained really deep in the gelcoat. In one spot I tried with 150 and sanded for ages and there is still some discoloration.

I'm getting scared that maybe I'll sand through the gelcoat and I'm seeing the glass underneath.

Help what do I do

stop sanding before you mess up even more! the best thing you can do now is use a compound (I would recomend 3M's cutting compound, it's in a blue and black container) and try to restore it back close to the same color. if you keep sanding you might have to get the boat resprayed with gel, again not hard to do but time consuming and if you can't or don't feel comfortable doing it yourself it won't be to cheap to get done......they do make a gel repair kit but i'm not sure how far that would get you. Do you have any pictures? that could help. but the good news is everything can always be fixed well most of the time. :lol:

I think I will have to sand with fine grit to make it smooth and then compound and try out a pigmented wax. Just to clarify though ,it is possible that the original gelcoat could well be discoloured the whole way through and that no amount of sanding will fix it.

On the bright side I have only currently started on the inside of one hull. I was going to work out what will work before committing to the whole boat.

oh well thats good at least and you are very true, if it is an older boat as mine is, over the years the gel fades from the sun ligh. So more than likely the whole boat is going to have that discoloration. but try the compound and let me know if that works out. i've been trying to find other sollution that could also possibly work for you.

Well I think I got the deep scratches from the rough sandpaper out with 600 without making it much worse. Guess I'll have to live with the blotches. Compound didn't do much. If I could put the boat inside and had power tools I'd sand it all back and re-gelcoat it. However I'm doing the whole thing in a parking lot and think it would turn out rubbish. I'll just 600 - 1000 - polish them after the repairs. Priority is to make it smooth and watertight. Now too fussed what it looks like this season.

haha this is true but i no hobie sells a gel repair kit out of there catalog thats around 30 dollars that you can mix and match the color. I'm not sure if it would patch the spot or not.

hello

i would like to polish the hulls of my 1994 hobie 16. the hulls (white) are basically in good condition, but they don´t shine like new.
i now read several times that the 3M rubbing compounds are good to polish, but i wondered if it´s really necessary to use such an "aggressive" product, since it seems that the ones that use it have coloured hulls which probably show more effect.

there are two different types of 3M rubbing compounds which one would you recommend.
does someone of you has a picture that shows the difference before and after polishing?

rubbing compounds come in several grades, usually the consumer stuff is mid to course. If you go to a auto body shop supply place they will have professional products that range from ultra fine to very course. If your hulls aren't too bad just use the fine with a orbital polisher, they will come out looking like new.
