So...I came across a 1983 Hobie 16 for next to nothing. It has the 1983 "boomer" sails that have never seen salt water and have not been used since 1987. They are in near perfect condition; one may even say crispy.

My boat is a 1985 with the "fantasia" sails. They have seen salt water, and even after replacing the batten pocket protectors, you can still tell that the sails have seen a bit of weather (stains, salty gromets)...

Were there any changes in the thickness of dacron, stitching technique or thread, and/or cut between 1983 and 1985? I am thinking of putting the 1983 sails on my boat and the 1985 sails on the boat that is waiting to be restored.

Any advice would be helpful. Thanks...

Jeffrey

depends on... If you have one of the late '85's with comptip mast your stock sails would not have the reaf option. My Hobie is an early 85 model and there the sails are idendical to a 83.
Way later thare was a change in how the jib was cut.
What you have in mind will work.
