| Post subject: | What year Hobie 16 should I buy? |
Hi everyone. I'm Looking to buy a good used Hobie 16 and was wondering how much they have changed over the years. I asume there are spans of model years that are basically the same and probably some model years to avoid. Can you give me some suggestions on what model years to look for and why? Thanks! Kenny, Over the years hobie has not changed the overall design of the boat, all that has changed is the hardware as to modern technology. I would stay away from the the year 79, during this year hobie changed the fiberglass epoxy and that year seems to have alot of soft spots. These are spots usually in front of the tramps on the hulls, when you push down on these spots the hulls will "fall in" to say about a half of an inch. Stay away from these as someone once tolf me there like cancer, once they start you cant stop them. So I would stay away from the year 79. Also you have to take in comsideration the hardware and what needs to be replaced when buying your boat. I just bought an 88 hobie 16 and love it. But i will tell you it took alot of searching to find her. You will come across what you will think is a great deal but step back and take in consideration how much you will have to put back into the boat. For instance the sails, the blocks, rigging, rudders and cams, and the tramp. Where are you located I can do some seaching for you haha but the real test is when you go look at it. The highest production years (by far) of Hobie 16s were the late 70's / early 80's. That's why you see so many of them around. I'm not aware of any particular problem with 79's. Soft spots are like cancer - don't buy someone else's problem and make it your own. Boats from 83 to 85 are known to be lighter - as much as 20 - 30 lbs lighter. Weights crept up after that, but were brought back down in the early 90's. Almost all boats since then are within a few pounds of minimum weight (320#). In 1995, Hobie USA started building the boats using integrated traveller tracks, a significant improvement. An upgraded traveller with larger wheels was introduced in 1996. Anything 1996 or after should be in very good shape. Unfortunately, they're much harder to find. |

Try to buy the newest boat in good condition within your budget. As Matt B. mentioned, there have been changes over the years usually for the better. Hobies aren't immune to the passage of time, so beware buying an old one needing work and upgrades. Hobie dealers are a good place to start since the dealer can give you the straight dope on what to expect with a specific boat. |

Well, I have a 1972 H16 and its GREAT! considering 1972 is pretty old and its still awesome, year doesn't really matter, well almost. stay away from the 1979 H16. the fibreglass was soft in that year. |
