H16 Mast rotation

Post subject:  H16 Mast rotation
I recently bought a H16 and I havn't taken it sailing yet (the lake is a 2 foot layer of ice) but from what I see in videos the Mast rotates from side to side depending on what angle the sails are set out. is this normal? is there a way to stop it? I think that I would just feel more secure if the mast didn't rotate on my boat, instead the gooseneck was on a hinge. is there a way to do this or is the mast rotation just a normal part of a H16 and its perfectly fine?

Mast rotation is a big 10/4 on a Hobie. Check out some sail boat web sites as to the pros and cons of a rotating mast.

Mast Rotation is just a normal part of a Hobie Cat. I would just let it rotate. It is very safe, and built to rotate. In fact some people shave off some metal on the mast foot to allow it to rotate more. I have been out sailing with the mast step pin in before, and it holds the mast in place and doesn't let it rotate, and it actually makes a big difference if you let the mast rotate. I like it because it lets the sails do there job they way they should. So If I where you don't worry about it, mast rotation is perfectly normal! Just make sure you put the Teflon chips in!

It's not only normal, it's recommended. Don't be afraid. I felt the same way when I first started sailing. I felt that anything that was placed under that kind of stress should be anchored. The boat ( not just the H16 but all beachcats I've ever seen) was designed that way for a reason. The rotation allows it to perform much better. If your standing rigging is solid, you have no fears. :D
