Do any of you have any view on how to handicap a hobie 16 sailed single handed in local club races?

We have two, and are a small club, so do not want to discourage the sailors.

The Helms are big Rugby player types, that weigh in around 130kg, so technically they make the minimum class weight restriction.

Or do we just accept that they are at class weight, and therefore treat them the same as other crewed boats?

Accept them at class weight.

Race em! They can carry up to 50 lbs of weight, I believe, to make class. There's a guy here in Div 3 that solos a H20 and carries a few lbs.

There is no requirement for the number of crew, only the total crew weight. Any number of people can race the boat and still comply with the rules.

There are basically only two rules regarding weight- 1) the combined weight of all crew must total 285lb or more.
2) 50lb of dead weight may be carried to reach minimum weight. If more than 50lb is required, then you have to bring an additional person.

Let em race, long as they make the 285# limit, have at it.

I'm gonna do a solo H16 campaign this year after ... uhummm... Mixed results with picking up crew last year, to put it mildly. One guy almost got left in Long Island sound to find his own ride back to the breach after a frustratingly bad race day. It's one thing to not know how to sail, but don't say you CAN if after 1 tack it becomes painfully obvious that you CANT!!! Anyway, people out there with good crew, be nice to em, they're worth their weight in gold ( or at least 50lbs of lead in my case!!) =•D

keep the pointy side up!!
