We have been there, done that. Hobie 16 is the strongest one-design Hobie class and every effort is made to keep it that way. Mylar sails were added in the late 80s - early 90s in an effort to add more color excitement, but the cut / shape was adjusted to try and keep the sails as similar as possible. It just wasn't worth it... we stuck with Dacron for one-design issues. |

Not to mention, that for some reason, the Dacron sails were faster. Also, the material Hobie used (same as on the 17 - one side Mylar / one side Dacron taffeta) did not hold up well - especially the jib where it hits the mast. Lots of delamination problems. |

If you're not racing, or are racing but have extra dough for a second set of sails, consider an after market pentex sail. You don't get the variety of colors as dacron, but the performance is there. |

I don't know why you would want Mylar on a 16 anyway, The Hobie Dacron Sail will last for just about forever if you look after it and will last for 20 years if you don't, there practically indestructible. http://beachcatsaustralia.ning.com/ |
