I capsized my boat at the last regatta I was at. During the righting process I lost my balance and stepped off of the lip of the hull and my foot landed in the middle of the inside of the hull near the rear pylon. There was a crack sound and now the hull will depress slightly in that small area. How concerned should I be? Do I need to take measures to fix this? Will this make it more prone to delam? The rest of the boat is solid, I just don't think that area is made to take all 250 lbs of me more or less falling one small spot. Suggestions? I know that area doesn't recieve a lot of stress, but I want to make sure my boat is ok. |

It won't be prone to delam - it already is delaminated. The crack you heard was the layers separating. I'd do the resin injection before it has a chance to grow. |

what year is your boat ? if the hulls were sound to begin with they should have taken the hit just fine. |

im going to guess its a 1983  thats is where my soft spots were located, on the inboard side of both hulls. made that same "crunch" noise when weight was placed on them...... filled them up, now they are rock solid....i plan on using the keel (which is new) or the edges to stand on if i (when i) capsize her. |

The hulls are actually from 86. I think the boat is solid more or less. I came down on this spot pretty hard and all of my weight was focused in one little area, basically in the middle of the hull (from lip to keel). It's a relatively small area that flexes. I think I will inject epoxy and just not worry about it. I just didn't know if I should do anything more drastic, like replace glass in that area. It just pisses me off to know that I replaced my 83 hulls that had delaminated on their own, and now I am responsible for putting a spot on the 86 hulls. Had I just jumped off the boat when I lost my balance I don't think that spot would have developed. Thanks for your input everyone. |
