Post subject:  Sailing newbie- anyone in NC want to teach me?

Hey everyone!

My name is Dustin, and I recently bought a Hobie 16 that I'm super excited to start sailing. My dad's been a sailor for 30 years, but the problem is he's a terrible teacher! I'm hoping there's someone in North Carolina (I'm in Durham) who'd be willing to go out with me and get me started on this thing. I was thinking Jordan lake would be a good place to do it, but I'd make the trip up to Kerr if it's more convenient for the teacher.

Also, if anyone has a cheap tramp that they don't need anymore, that's the one part I need to get this boat complete. I'm on the hunt, but money is an issue (poor college student!).

Let me know, and I'll see you out there! I'll probably be the one capsized with the dumbfounded look on my face!

Thanks,
Dustin

Drummer should be going to Virgina Beach to race this weekend, but I guess sailing on Jordan is just as good. By the way Drummer, I've moved to Whispering Pines/Pinehurst and I think I'm only about 40-45 minutes from Jordan now. Dustin, I also sail on Jordan and I would be more than happy to go for a sail with you or give you whatever little pointers I can with my limited experience. E-mail me at hobie16hullflyer (at) yahoo (dot) com and we can exchange numbers.

I know what you mean about dad's not always being the best teachers after being out of the game for many years. I've got a funny story about why I had to replace my mast base before I could go sailing about 4-5 years ago. We rigged my new to me boat for the first time in the backyard. The dialouge was something to the effect of.

Dad- go ahead and raise the mast
Me- sure thing dad, I trust you
Dad- Alright, now stop raising it
Me- I can't hold this thing like this anymore, she's coming down!!!

That days lesson- it helps to attach the shrouds when stepping the mast. It went up and down in between the bows without missing a beat. Luckily, the mast base was all that broke.

Hey James, Good luck this weekend. I will try and make the next one. May sail in the CSC race this Sunday for a laugh :)

I've also got an old tramp that you can have to get you started. But, stay in the market for a new or newer one as this one has very little life in it. I'll have to check this weekend to see if I still have it, so don't hold me to it just yet.

Always toyed with idea of putting a permanent post up on Places to Sail that keeps an eye on wind reports and times to sail. Like a NOR -- except it would be a "NC NOS". A "Notice of Sail" for Vista Point at Jordan, or for other local areas.

Since it's a fact of life here that winds are iffy, I keep an eye on NOAA Jordan forecast. When winds are up, it's like SURF'S UP! Throw gear in the car, hook it up and go. (The 3 day history link is good to watch. Winds around here pick up about mid-morning go to mid-afternoon when the forecast is right.)

For example, most of this week so far looks slow at this point. Although the current history looks good.

Vista Point is a good place to solo, Dustin. But there aren't many Hobies going out. Lot of vets around here who have moved on to the next level -- which is either racing or doing their own thing. Which is fine... There are three or four cat owners in my small 'hood, but we don't get out together.

Sorry but I do not have an extra mainsheet system. I'd be glad to help you round one up though. I know of at least one person trying to sell one.

I was just messing with you about this weekend, I know you aren't quite ready to race that thing. But in all seriousness you should look into doing the Camp Hatteras regatta later in the year. The best camping facilities (litterally right on the sound, bath houses, plus pool and hot tub), warm and shallow water, and well run buoy racing.

Or

Give a distance race a try and come to Duck, NC for the Duck Cup. Only 5 dollars a day and free camping. We could double stack our boats if your interested. June 12-13.

I think all I need for now in the mainsheet system is the double with becket for the boom. When is Hatteras? for June 12 and 13 I am camping with family on Jordan

We need to get together at Jordan soon, so let me know when you are planning a trip

Abbman, I'd love to take that tramp off your hands if you still have it! The boat won't be ready for about two weeks or so (still rigging it up), but it's great to see that there are so many cat sailors in the area! I'm pretty much starting from square one here, but I'm a quick learner and I'm very excited about getting started. Anyone who'd be interested in jumping on with me some time and getting me started would be greatly appreciated!

Anyone who could help me out, please send me an email at thedustyone (at) gmail (dot) com.
