Post subject: | Help with rudder lower casting |
Hello I could need an advice in my re-makeing of my 1986 H16. The rudder locked good and released well last summer, but the other one was a bit harder. I have now replaced rudder cams and the plastic parts are functioning well. But one rudder is still not working well, it is the question of the lower casting that is not fitting well into the upper casting, metal goes against metal. This ones working well ![]() This one is not working ![]() Is it the case that there is a lower casting that is supposed to be on th right rudder, and the lower casting pair-mate that is supposed to be on the left rudder? Or is the lower casting the same both to the left as to the right? If I replace the lower casting, has the midel been the same on H16 since 1986 or is there different models? Thankful for some guiding!! Jesper Lindau |

Hello! Is the upper hole in your rudder ovaled? Does the upper casting move from side to side a bunch? |

I'd say you have swapped the uppers / lowers. If they were working before you took the system apart... that makes the most sense. The must be drilled a bit off, so not interchangeable. |

Hello! Sorry for late answer, had to go on a trip! I tried to swapp places but the same problem reoccured. If the hole you ment were in the upper casting you could say that it is a bot ovaled, but it is not moving from side to side, the grip is firm. Do I need to buy new castings completely. ![]() ![]() Thank you for feedback! Jesper |

Those Euro castings are really rough. The mis-alignment is either in the bolt hole drilled through the upper casting or the corresponding hole in the rudder - it's not perpendicular to the rudder. Try loosening the upper casting bolt and see if that helps. You may have to put shims on on side or the other to get the castings to line up. |

Thanks - i will try to loosen the bolt and use some shims to align better. I thought that it might be an idea to use the polyurethane washers they sell from Hobie to tightenthe rudders. Or do you have another tip on what to use for shims? Jesper |

You don't need anything special for the shims. You can cut pieces out of plastic containers to use as shims. |

Fill the holes in the rudders and drill them on a drill press. I don't think the way the bolts look out of parrallel in your first photo in your latest post is from camera distortion. Looks to me like the upper casting is coming down in the wrong plane because of the way the holes are drilled through the rudders. |
