Post subject:  Question about hull stiffness....

I just got the boat put back together, minus the pylon bolts and the trampoline.

After putting all the corner castings down (had to use mallet and give some good whacks) i sheeted the mainsheet around the crossbars and pulled them in about 2in.....

now im freaking out, because the boat is still stupid loose. and when i say stupid loose, i mean its not rigid at all. you can lift the front right hull about 9inches before it starts to bring the other up, you can notice the front crossbar is just not tight at all against everything, even with the mainsheet pulling in the side bars...

I took the mainsheet off, and did some measurements. When I pick up the front, ive got about 10'' of lift before the other side starts to move...the rear is about 7-8''. This is WITHOUT a trampoline installed and not pylon bolts. The side bars twist a little bit in the corner castings, i might shim those up tomorrow with some Al cans....they probbaly twist 1-2mm...not much at all.

so my question goes out to Matt, Jeremy, anyone who puts Hobies together...Is it normal for these things to be not rigid AT ALL without a trampoline? Am i just freaking out? I'd like to go to bed easy tonight knowing after i install the new mesh tramp (from surfcity) and the pylon bolts, the frame will be siff as hell and i can lift both hulls up.....

please help me out!

Put the bolts in there. Crank down the tramp. Get back to us.

Phew! well i put the bolts in and tightened them nice and tight with lock washers. now ive only got about 5in of movement. Every joint is nice and stiff.....fixed the sidebars by tapping pennies into the small joints with a screwdriver and a hammer....they dont move at all now.....i eneded up stuffing about $2.00 worth of coins into all the gaps everywhere and it literally took out all the slack of the frame. When i lift both hulls, i can notice no movement in the castings or joints anywhere, so thats really good!

bolts made a huge difference! im confident that the trampoline will take the rest of the slack up and it will be stiff as hell!

Jeremy i still need to get that black mesh tramp from you!

Pennies in the gap for the side bars, never heard that one before, whatever works is a good thing.
