On the Hobie 16 or the rudder mounts screwed into a blind nuts or do the screws simply thread into the fiberglass. I need to make a repair after a wild ride.
Secondly, my boat is a 1988 model to the best of my understanding, Has anyone had issues with the gelcoat cracking and chipping off? The decks are horribily cracked and the edge flakes off from time to time. I owned a 1979 and the gelcoat never seemed to have any issues.

The bolts used for the rudder gudgeons feature a type of thread that would not hold if it would be just screwed into the fiberglass. IIRC there is a piece of 4 - 5 mm aluminum laminated into each of the transoms.
Gel coat... My hobie is an '85 ... not too much trouble here.

If there are cracks along the decks, you may have a delam problem. Besides the gelcoat cracks are there any other issues, soft spots, loose pylons, lots of water in the hulls, other structureal stuff?

replacing the gudgeons is not a big deal as long as you can get the old screws out, just remove the old gudgeons, put caulk over the holes and screw in the new gudgeon. if anyof the old screws break off you have a much bigger problem. on one boat i ended up with about a 1" hole around the screw going all the way down to the aluminum and had to grind out the old screw, then fill, glass and gelcoat the transom back to normal and relocate the gudgeons, a fairly intensive project. Good luck
