Hello, i'am sellling my amf and looking to buy a hobbie cat. my sailing is very limited although i can sail a sunfish. (WHO CAN'T) anyway looking for a hobbie 16' or a 14'...which would you guys and gals recommend for a 120 acre lake with high trees around it and has a tendency for swirling winds...lake is kidney shaped....do i need a jib or not and can i buy a 16' and just not the jib? i will be sailing with my girlfriend and i do not think she wants to be flying on the hull. just pleasure cruseing...you see i just turned 55 june 1st...don't let the age fool you, i'am in very tip top shape and can handle most 40 year olds...sorry about all the questions. i do not want to spend a ton of money but don't want junk either. where is the best place to buy and what can 1200.00 buy you. thanks in advance. just browse on craigslist in your area! i was looking for parts and came across a good condition HB16 with trailer for $750. we sailed for the first time without a jib and it worked out. we kept getting stuck in the dead zone but that was most likely our complete lack of experience haha |

There's alot of H16's in Minnesota, most are over priced. Best person to talk to would be Jim Sohn, he's the dealer in Des Moines and won't lead you in the wrong direction. |

Gary, I noticed you are selling the sunfish to upgrade to a Hobie. Maybe I’m too much of a pac-rat, but I’d keep the sunny and still look for a Hobie 16. I have had my 16 since 1980 and in the mean time I have also acquired 4 sunfish. The last one came into the fleet this spring and needed some serious repairs. There is a time and place for each kind of boat, winds audience, etc. We have the sunfish for the nieces and nephews and any guests that show up and are not familiar with sailing. The Hobie is for higher winds, (when the hurricanes are coming in). Then there are the Kayaks for dead seas and early in the morning. Good luck in your Hobie search. I recommend a 16, they can be handled by one person, but are steady for taking the lady for a nice run across the pond. |
